How Solar Works

Using the Sun’s Natural Energy to Power Your Home or Business

Energy independence is on everyone’s mind these days. With the unpredictable cost of fuel, a fragile electrical grid, and struggling economy it makes sense to create an energy strategy that provides a brighter, more secure future.

Now Is the Perfect Time

Not only has solar technology been proven effective over many decades, but today, it’s more affordable than ever.

1000 Watts Per Square Meter

That’s how much of the sun’s power strikes the earth every hour. Yes even in places the sun doesn’t seem as strong! Photovoltaic (PV) technology transforms sunlight into electricity. To use this technology for your home or business, you need a basic system comprised of the following:

1

Solar modules, which are embedded with PV cells to generate DC electricity

2

Inverter, which changes DC power to the AC power used in most buildings

3

Proper disconnects and over-current protection

How big a solar electric system do I need?

We take a consultative approach to designing a solar electric system that’s focused on your particular situation.

It starts by asking questions: What is your current electricity usage/bill? How much of your electric bill do you want to save or offset? What is your budget? What are your long-term energy goals? We also discuss simple strategies for reducing your electricity consumption and using needed electricity more efficiently. We look at your site: Do you have enough Sun? Do you have good location with southern exposure? Do you enough space for solar modules?

Then, we design a solar electric system that’s sized to match your needs and objectives as closely as possible given your site conditions and budget. Generally, we aim to design a system that covers 50 percent to 100 percent of your annual electricity needs.

My house doesn’t get much sun, what can I do?

Solar electric systems require good Sun exposure. The Southern exposure is always recommended. If you don’t have a good south facing roof, you can consider using East and/or West face of the roof. The other option would be to consider Ground Mount system.

Do solar electric systems make financial sense right now?

The cost of solar modules has been steadily coming down, while cost of electricity from Public Utilities has continued to rise, on average 5.5% every year. There is a federal tax incentive as well as State level incentives are available. After the system is paid off, you can enjoy ongoing savings for the life of your system. As long as the Sun continues to shine, you’ll be making free electricity for your home or business.

Will it increase the value of my house?

With the cost energy sky-rocketing, anything you can do to make your home more energy efficient will be beneficial at sale. Solar electric systems will add value to your home.

How to Use Safe Harbor to Lock in Commercial Solar Incentives Before They Disappear

Safe Harbor is a compliance pathway that lets commercial solar projects lock in current federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) rates even if construction and commissioning finish later. By meeting IRS requirements that show construction has begun — either through qualifying spending or meaningful physical work — projects can preserve the higher credit rate available in […]

How Much Does It Cost to Add Solar Panels to an Existing System

Adding panels to an existing solar power system is more than buying modules. Key cost drivers are the number of panels (system size), whether the inverter needs upgrading or adding (string vs microinverters), racking and roof work, electrical wiring and disconnects, and local permitting/inspection fees. Complex roofs, long conduit runs, or the need to replace older equipment push costs higher.
